Joint media release with the Federal Labor Candidate for Hinkler

Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson, and Labor Candidate for Hinkler, Belinda McNeven, today officially launched the “Coastal Birds of the Great Sandy Biosphere” booklet in Hervey Bay.

The 52 page booklet highlights the bird species that are part of the region’s internationally significant lakes, rainforests, coastal sand mass and wetlands. The cost of printing the booklet was covered by the Federal Labor Government’s Caring for our Country program.

“Tourism is a $245 million industry for Hervey Bay. It creates local employment and supports local businesses,” Martin Ferguson said.

“Australia is renowned for its nature-based tourism and this booklet will build on our existing strengths in this area.

“This publication encourages visitors to stay longer and spend more in the local region and that can mean the difference between an average spend of $94 for a day visitor compared to $500 for an overnight visitor,” Martin Ferguson said.

“By developing the booklet, the Burnett Mary Regional Group will lift the profile of the region and help educate visitors about the unique natural environment,” Labor Candidate for Hinkler, Belinda McNeven said.

A re-elected Gillard Labor Government will continue to support innovative tourism projects with $40 million in new funding for the competitive, merits-based TQUAL Grants program.

Funding for this project is already included in the 2010 Budget.
